High blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, occurs when there's too much glucose circulating in the bloodstream. Recognizing the signs of hyperglycemia is crucial for managing diabetes. Common symptoms include:
Frequent Urination - Excessive glucose in the blood leads to increased urine production, causing frequent trips to the restroom.
Increased Thirst - Dehydration accompanies frequent urination, prompting a heightened sense of thirst.
Fatigue - Cells are deprived of energy when glucose cannot enter them, leading to feelings of tiredness and exhaustion.
Blurred Vision - High blood sugar levels can affect the fluid levels in the eyes, resulting in blurry vision and long-term loss of sight.
Slow Healing Wounds - Elevated blood sugar levels can impair the body's ability to heal wounds efficiently. Even a “small cut” can be dangerous if not treated correctly.
Identifying Low Blood Sugar
Conversely, low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, occurs when glucose levels drop below normal. This condition requires immediate attention to prevent severe complications. Common symptoms of hypoglycemia include:
Shakiness or Tremors - A sudden drop in blood sugar can cause shakiness or trembling, making it difficult to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills.

Managing Blood Sugar Levels
Proper management of blood sugar levels is essential for individuals to have a better quality of life living with type 2 diabetes. Here are some strategies to help maintain optimal blood sugar levels:
Monitor Blood Sugar - Regularly check blood sugar levels using a glucose meter and record readings. Personally, I previously used a Constant Blood Glucose Monitor but due to its inaccuracies, especially at lower and higher readings, I turfed it for the tried and true finger trick method. My Accuchek model sends the results directly to a phone app, which is tremendously useful.
Balanced Diet - Follow a balanced diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. Limit intake of sugary and processed foods. I have my diet down to where I am able to maintain my A1C at 6.1 without missing much.
Regular Exercise - Engage in regular physical activity to help lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. A short walk can significantly improve your blood sugar levels.
Medication Adherence - Take prescribed medications as directed by healthcare providers to help regulate blood sugar levels. With little changes in lifestyle, I have been able to eliminate the need for medications – and you can too.
Stay Hydrated - Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration, especially when blood sugar levels are high.
